Time To Paint? 5 Tips To Eliminate Some Of The Struggle

Posted on

Nothing changes the appearance of your home like a fresh coat of paint. If you're tired of the same old colors in your home, it's time for a change. If you've been putting off painting your home because you don't want to deal with the mess, stop. There are a lot of things you can do to take the work out of painting your home. Before you start on your home, here are five steps you should take to eliminate some of the struggle.

Wrap Things Up

When it comes to painting your home, it can be a real struggle to keep paint off bulky items, like the toilets and refrigerators. You can't just move them out of the house, but you can make cleanup easier. Before you start painting, wrap your bulky items in plastic cling wrap. Unlike ordinary plastic paint tarps, the plastic wrap will cling to the objects and protect them from paint splatters and spills. Once you're done painting, simply remove the plastic wrap and toss it in the trash can.

Reduce the Odors

If you're not looking forward to having your home filled with the unpleasant odor of paint, be proactive. Take matters into your own hands before you start painting. First, set up small portable fans in each room you're going to be painting. The fans will help circulate the air and get rid of the paint odors. Next, add some lemon extract to your paint. Open your paint can and add a few drops of lemon extract and stir it well. The lemon extract will reduce the pungent paint odor, but won't alter the color of the paint.

Stop the Stick Before It Starts

If you're worried about your doors and windows getting stuck once the paint dries, grab the petroleum jelly. A bit of petroleum jelly along the edges of your doors and windows will stop the paint from sealing them shut. Wipe the inside edges of the doors and window jambs. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the inside tracks and jambs.

Make Tape Removal Easier

If you're going to be using painters tape to keep your lines clean, make sure you're prepared for the clean-up. Painters tape can get sticky, especially if it's left in place for an extended period. When it's time to remove the tape, use your blow dryer to loosen the hold so that it will lift right up. The blow dryer will prevent the tape from removing any of the fresh paint.

Hire a Professional Paint Service

If you're not ready to tackle the job by yourself, hire a professional paint service. Professional painters will take care of everything for you, including the initial prep work and the clean-up.
